Oligarchy | form of government with a few leaders. Leaders from wealthy class-usually earned through birthright (espesially in ancient history) Usually favors wealthy or upper class. Danger: if citizens needs are not met, this is not a stable form of government. |
Tyranny | comes to power by force. Has group of followers and usually strong army to keep tyrant in power. Usually can only come to power if citizens are unhappy with current gov. Danger: if citizens needs are not met, this is not a stable form of government. Usually very unstable. |
Democracy | idea is that power is in the hands of the people. Tries to meet the needs of most people. Danger: if citizens needs are not met, this is not a stable form of government. Democracy is just as fragile as other forms- it must be maintained carefully! |
Government of Sparta | was a limited moarchy/oligarchy. There was king who was supported by a group of wealthy men |
Government of Athens | was a form of democracy. Each leader got closer to representing all people and meeting the needs of citizens thought many stayed unrepresentative: women/slaves. Still this is the birth place of democracy |
