Bus topology | A type of network arrangement. |
Client/ server network | Type of network in which one computer acts as the server, maanaging resources, and the rest are clients, using the resources. |
Clients | Computers on a network that are not acting as a server. |
Ethernet | A network protocol for a LAN. |
Hard disk drives | Drives used to store data inside of a computer. |
Input devices | Devices that enable the user to get data and commands into the comptuer. |
Local are network (LAN) | A network generally confined to one geographical area. |
Magnetic tape drives | A type of storage media that is used for making backup copies of large volumes of data. |
Modem | A device connected between the computer and telephone line that converts analog signals to digital and vice versa. |
Monitor | Video display screen that displays images. |
Network | A group of two or more computers linked together; connects one computer to other computers and to peripheral devices such as printers. |
Optical storage devices | Devices that use laser technology to read and write data on magnetic-coated platters. |
Output devices | Devices that enable the computer to give the user the results of the processed data. |
Parallel ports | Ports used to connect input and output devices physically to the computer. Parallel ports transmit data eight bits at a time. |
Peer-to-peer network | A type of LAN, usually used in a small office or classroom. |
Printers | Devices used to produce a paper or hard copy of the processing results. |
Ring topology | A type of network arrangement. |
Scanners | Input device used to make digital copies of pictures so they can be used in preparing publications. |
Serial ports | Ports used to connect input and output devices physically to the computer. Serial ports transmit data one bit at a time. |
Server | A computer on a network that manages the network resources. |
Star topology | A geometric arrangement of a network. |
TCP/IP | A type of computer protocol; the main protocol used on the Internet. |
Token ring | A type of network topology. |
Transmission media | Media used to transmit data from one device to another; may be wireless or phyiscal. |
Voice recognition | Software and hardware used to "speak" commands into the computer and to enter text. |
Wide area network (WAN) | A number of conncte networks that cover a large geographical area. The Internet is an example. |
