Terms used to help study and understand stories.

nonfictionA true story.
narrativeA story.
fictionA made-up story that was created in the author's imagination.
conflictThe problem that the major (main) character faces in the story.
plotThe major events in the story.
characterThe people and/or animals in the story.
expositionThe introduction to the story. This is where the setting and the main characters are introduced.
rising action/complicationsThe little events that lead up to the climax and move the story along.
climaxThe most exciting part of the story. That part where the main characters final action becomes obvious.
falling actionThe events after the climax.
resolutionThe end of the story. The part of the story where all of the little complications are solved.
major charactersThose characters that the story is mainly about.
minor charactersThose characters that help the story develop, but who are not main characters.
short storyA story that is usually less that 50 pages and can be read in one setting.
novelA longer story that is longer than 50 pages and usually takes a while to read.
