| exposition | The introduction to the story. This is where the setting and the main characters are introduced. |
| rising action/complications | The little events that lead up to the climax and move the story along. |
| climax | The most exciting part of the story. That part where the main characters final action becomes obvious. |
| falling action | The events after the climax. |
| resolution | The end of the story. The part of the story where all of the little complications are solved. |
| major characters | Those characters that the story is mainly about. |
| minor characters | Those characters that help the story develop, but who are not main characters. |
| short story | A story that is usually less that 50 pages and can be read in one setting. |
| novel | A longer story that is longer than 50 pages and usually takes a while to read. |
