| Chunking | Human beings are capable of remembering seven things "plus or minus two." The brain can remember more than seven items by chunking them together (like phone numbers). |
| Method of Loci | When you "hook" information to a location, first, you think of a location that is very familiar to you, such as your backyard (any location will do). Next, you create a visual image of that location in your mind. Then, you choose a set of information you want to remember. Now, mentally assign one small piece of information to each item in the location. |
| Context/Advanced Organizer | Where the topic of the passage is given before the reading of a passage, students are able to remember mroe information from the passage. Relevant contextual knowledge is a prerequisite for comprehending. |
| Mnemonics | Make up "silly" words or sayings to remember them. You can remember 7 times more information this way than by just re-reading information for a test. |
| Encoding Specificity | Take information out of the brain in the same manner you put it in. Example: for a spelling test - not practice it in an auditory manner and then take the test on paper and pencil. Study the way you will be tested. |
