Florida Cession | 1819 - US receives Spanish Florida from Spain by agreeing to pay 5 million dollars to Americans owed money by Spain. Spain saw they couldn't defend Florida from us and they were trying to end revolutions in their colonies in Latin America. |
Red River Cession | 1818 - US receives this land through a treaty with Great Britain. This land was in dispute between Britain and the US. An agreement was reached that would give us this piece of land and a similar piece futher north to Great Britain. |
Louisiana Purchase | 1803 - US purchases this land from Napoleon of France for 15 million dollars. We bought it because we feared a large French empire in North America, we wanted control of the Mississippi River, and control of the city of New Orleans. |
Addition of 1783 | This land was received from a treaty with Great Britain following the American Revolution. This was land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. This land was gained during the time period we were being governed by the Articles of Confederation. |
Land Ordinance of 1785 | With the new land we acquired in 1783 the US government had to develop a plan to take this land, in the hands of the government, and get it into the hands of the people and encourage movement west. The land ordinance set up the process by which the government sold the land. |

Steps to Becoming a state | Appointed a governor. When your territory reaches 5000 males you could have your own legislature and a delegate to Congress. When you reached 60000 you could ask Congress to become a state. |
