EMC 6 - Perimeter & Area

Vocabulary words students in N-MUSD are expected to know. The first sets concern math. In particular, the Essential Math Concepts, identified by CUSD.

AB
altitudeThe perpendicular distance from the base of a geometric figure to the opposite vertex.
areaThe number of square units needed to cover a given surface.
baseThe number being put to a power: 8^3=8x8x8, 8 is the base.
circleA closed curve with all points on the curve an equal distance from a given point called the center of the circle.
circumferenceThe distance around a circle: equal to pi times diameter.
parallelogramA quadrilateral whose opposite sides are parallel and congruent.
piThe ratio of the circumference of a circle to the length of its diameter: pi=3.14 or 22/7.
quadrilateralA four-sided polygon (shape).
radiusA line segment with one endpoint at the center of a circle and the other endpoint on the circle.
rhombusA parallelogram whose four sides are congruent and whose opposite angles are congruent.
square unitA unit of measure that has a length of one unit and a width of one unit used to measure area.
trapezoidA quadrilateral with only one pair of parallel sides, normally connected by slanted sides.
vertexThe point where two sides meet.
