EMC 7 - Surface Area & Volume

Vocabulary words students in N-MUSD are expected to know. The first sets concern math. In particular, the Essential Math Concepts, identified by CUSD.

AB
altitudeThe perpendicular distance from the base of a geometric figure to the opposite vertex.
baseThe number being put to a power: 8^3=8x8x8, 8 is the base.
circumferenceThe distance around a circle: equal to pi times diameter.
coneA solid figure with a circular base and one vertex.
cylinderA solid figure with two parallel, congruent circular bases connected by a curved surface.
edgeThe line segment along which two faces of a 3D shape intersect.
faceA flat surface of a 3D shape.
lateral areaThe area of the lateral surface of a solid.
netA connected arrangement of polygons in a plane that can be folded up to form a polyhedron.
piThe ratio of the circumference of a circle to the length of its diameter: pi is about 3.14.
prismA 3D shape whose two bases are congruent, parallel polygons in parallel planes and whose lateral faces are parallelograms.
pyramidA polyhedron with one base that is a polygon and with lateral faces that are triangles which share a common vertex.
slant heightThe length of a lateral edge of a conic solid.
solid figureA three-dimensional shape.
sphereA solid figure with all points the same distance from the center.
surface areaThe sum of the areas of all the faces, or surfaces, of a solid figure.
vertexThe point where two sides meet.
volumeThe number of cubic units needed to occupy a given space.
