| Keelboat | A flat-bottomed boat used to haul soldiers and equipment. This boat could be |
| Limber | The wagon that carries the limber chest. It is connected to the cannon and is |
| Limber Chest | The case that held artillery ammunition. |
| Musket | Smooth bore (no rifling in barrel) shoulder fired weapon. Able to carry a bayonet. |
| Napoleon | Nickname given to light twelve pounder gun/howitzer. |
| Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) | A sergeant or corporal. Ran the day to day operations |
| Officer | A soldier who has received a commission (a written document) from congress, |
| Platoon | Made up of perhaps twenty to thirty soldiers. |
| Quartermaster | An officer charged with providing quarters, clothing, transportation, etc., |
| Rank | Identifies the levels of authority over other soldiers. As an example, a private is the |
| Rations | Food which was issued to each soldier according to army regulations. |
| Regiment | Made up of 4 battalions of soldiers. |
| Regulations | Refers to the rules that a soldier must follow. Punishment was swift and |
| Rifle | A weapon that has rifling (grooves cut in bore of gun) that imparts a spin to the ball. |
| Sentry | A soldier stationed at a place to stand guard and prevent the passage of |
| Sergeant | Highest ranking noncommissioned officer in a company. Appointed by |
| Shako | Type of hat worn by soldiers in the infantry and U.S. Rifle Regiment. |
