The ablative without a preposition is used to express means; time; specification; description; comparison; degree of difference; cause; and the ablative absolute. Sometimes the ablative expresses manner without a preposition; as when the noun is modified. Sometimes the ablative expresses separation without a preposition as with certain verbs of separation such as those meaning to free; to lack; and to deprive. Prepositions with ablative are used to express accompaniment; manner; personal agent; place in which; place from which; and separation.
