| Bias/slant | Writing that indicates the views of the reader or writer. |
| ENG Hard Package | A news report that includes a reporter and crew and the final report is placed on videotape for later airing on the news cast. |
| Soft package: | A news story that is read by the anchor. It may include video or graphics to supplement the presentation. |
| Pyramid Style | Style of writing that places the general information first and later lists facts pertinent to the story. Usually used in News paper stories. |
| Stand up | A reporter stands in front of the camera and talks directly to the audience. It is usually done in the beginning of the story (Stand up intro), at the closing (stand up closing) and/or in the middle of the story to move a story along. |
| Logo | A symbol or drawing that represents a newscast or corporation |
| Executive Producer | The person in charge of the news cast. This person has final say over content and order. |
| Anchor | Also called talent, this person presents the news. The person(s) you see when you tune into the news. |
| Director | This person is like the conductor of the orchestra and makes sure the script is executed properly and in time. |
| Technical Director: | The person that operates the switcher. They bring up the correct camera as directed by the director. They also are responsible for all technical operations of the newscast. |
| Local News | Stories that pertain to the area of the viewers. Also includes |
| Regional News | News that pertains to an area larger than a city. (CN8 covers Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey) |
| National/International news | News pertaining to the country and world events. |
| 5 W’s | The Who, what, where, when, why and how of a story. |
| Nielson Ratings | A company that measures audience size. This company sells its information to radio and TV companies so they can know the audience size of their broadcast. |
| Hook | The opening line of a newscast that entices the audience to watch their newscast |
| Tease | : A line in a newscast that is placed before a commercial and keeps the audience tuned to their channel. |
| Cross Talk | Ad lib chatting between anchors. Usually done to segue stories or to create a light mood on the set. |
| Lower third/Tag: | : A graphic that indicates the person speaking. Also refers to the closing moments of the news package. |
| Closing | The last sentence or two of a newscast or of a news package. |
| OTS | Stands for Over The Shoulder and is a graphic that is placed over the shoulder of the anchor that indicates or references the story that is being presented. Sometimes it is a graphic or a picture of the event being presented |
| Ready Command | This command prepares the camera operator, graphic operator, audio engineer or floor manager. Usually a command to do something follows the ready command |
| QOS | Stands for Quiet on the Set. |
| Cue | This command means to start talking or to commence with the previous ready command. |
| Roll VTR | Press play on the VTR (VCR) |
| Talent | Also called the anchor. |
