Foreshadowing | Occurs when a writer provides hints that suggest future events in a story. Creates suspense ad makes readers eager to find out what will happen. |
Free Verse | Poetry that does not contain regular patters of rhythm or rhyme. Achieves a rhythm more like that of everyday speech. |

Haiku | Is a type of Japanese poetry that presents a picture of nature. IS 3 lines in length. The first line is 5 syllables, 2nd line is 7 syllables and the 3rd line is 5 syllables. |
Hyperbole | A figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effect. |
Imagery | Imagery Consists of descriptive words or phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader. Usually appeals to the 5 senses- sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. |
Irony | Contrast between appearance and reality- usually realty is the opposite of what it seems |
Dramatic Irony | The reader or viewer knows something that a character does not know. |
Verbal Irony | Exists when someone knowingly exaggerated or says one thing and mean another. |
Irony of Situation | A contrast between what a reader or character expects and what actually exists or happens. |
Metaphor | Is a comparison of two things that are basically unlike but have some qualities in common. DOES NOT contain like or as. |
meter | A regular pattern of stresses and unstressed syllable in a poem. It emphasizes the musical quality of the language. |
Narrative poem | Poetry that tells a story- contains characters, setting and plot. It also ahs rhythm, imagery and figurative language. |
Onomatopoeia | The use of a word whose sound makes you think of its meaning, as in buzz, gunk, zip |
Personification | The giving of human qualities to an animal, object or idea. |
Rhyme | The occurrence of similar or identical sounds at the end of two or more words, such as suite, heat and complete. |
Rhyme Scheme | Is a pattern of end rhymes in a poem. It is noted by assigning a letter of the alphabet. Lines that rhyme with one another are given the same letter. |
Rhythm | Is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Used to emphasize ideas and create mood. |
Simile | Is a figure o speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using the words like |
Stanza | A group of two or more lines that form a unit in a poem. |
