AlliterationThe repeating of beginning consonant sounds.
AllusionIs a reference to a famous person, place, event or work of literature.
Blank VerseIs unrhymed poetry written in meter. The lines are 10 syllables in length.
Concrete poemA form of poetry in which the shape or design helps express the meaning or feeling of a poem
External ConflictInvolves a character who struggles against force outside him or herself such as nature, a physical obstacle or another character.
Internal ConflictOne that occurs within a character.
Figurative languageA language that communicates meanings beyond the literal meanings and words. Words are often used to symbolize ideas and concepts.
ForeshadowingOccurs when a writer provides hints that suggest future events in a story. Creates suspense ad makes readers eager to find out what will happen.
Free VersePoetry that does not contain regular patters of rhythm or rhyme. Achieves a rhythm more like that of everyday speech.
ConflictA struggle between opposing forces.
HaikuIs a type of Japanese poetry that presents a picture of nature. IS 3 lines in length. The first line is 5 syllables, 2nd line is 7 syllables and the 3rd line is 5 syllables.
HyperboleA figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effect.
ImageryImagery Consists of descriptive words or phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader. Usually appeals to the 5 senses- sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.
IronyContrast between appearance and reality- usually realty is the opposite of what it seems
Dramatic IronyThe reader or viewer knows something that a character does not know.
Verbal IronyExists when someone knowingly exaggerated or says one thing and mean another.
Irony of SituationA contrast between what a reader or character expects and what actually exists or happens.
MetaphorIs a comparison of two things that are basically unlike but have some qualities in common. DOES NOT contain like or as.
meterA regular pattern of stresses and unstressed syllable in a poem. It emphasizes the musical quality of the language.
Narrative poemPoetry that tells a story- contains characters, setting and plot. It also ahs rhythm, imagery and figurative language.
OnomatopoeiaThe use of a word whose sound makes you think of its meaning, as in buzz, gunk, zip
PersonificationThe giving of human qualities to an animal, object or idea.
RhymeThe occurrence of similar or identical sounds at the end of two or more words, such as suite, heat and complete.
Rhyme SchemeIs a pattern of end rhymes in a poem. It is noted by assigning a letter of the alphabet. Lines that rhyme with one another are given the same letter.
RhythmIs a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Used to emphasize ideas and create mood.
SimileIs a figure o speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using the words like
