The Real Number System

SOL 8.2

AB
real numbersThe set of all rational and irrational numbers
rational numbersIs the set of all numbers that can be expressed as ratio (in the form of fractions, percent, or decimal), ex 1.2, 33%, 3/4
integerInteger is the set of whole numbers and their opposites (7 and -7)
whole numbersThe set of all whole numbers and zero 0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc
natural numbersThe set of all counting numbers (does not include zero); 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc
irrational numbersIs the set of all non repeating, non terminating decimals (ex pi, square root of 2)
communtative propertystates that changing the ORDER of two numbers either being added or multiplied, does NOT change the value of it. a + b = b + a & ab = ba
associative propertystates that changing the GROUPING of numbers that are either being added or multiplied does NOT change the value of it (a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c & a(bc) = (ab)c )
distributive propertya(b + c) = ab + ac & (b + c)a = ba + ca
identitive property of additiona + 0 = 0 + a = a
identitive property of multiplicationa(1) = 1(a) = a
additive inverse(or negative) For each real number a, there is a unique real number, denoted -a ( a + (-a) = 0 )
Multiplicative Inverse(or reciprocal) 2's reciprocal is 1/2
