| Shutter | A curtain/mechanical device that uncovers a single frame of film for a specified time. Allows light to travel through the lens and reach the film. |
| shutter release | mechanical or electrical button that causes the shutter top to open. |
| shutter speed | the time that a shutter remains open, expressed in a fraction of a second. |
| F-stop/aperture ring | controls the size of the aperture |
| aperture | the size of the lens opening itself |
| ASA/ISO | refers to the speed of film. |
| ASA/ISO indicator | A button or knob that allows you to adjust for your film speed. |
| viewfinder | rectangular window you look through and shows what will be in your photo when you click the shutter. |
| film advance lever | advances your film by one frame so you can expose it to light. |
| rewind release | releases your film so you can rewind it back into its original canister. It's usually a button on the bottom of your camera. |
| rewinder | rewinds the film back into its canister. |
| battery compartment | usually on the bottom of your camera. |
| film spool | to the left of the shutter screen. Where you insert your film. |
| film advance sprocket | to the immediate right of the shutter, this advances your film from frame to frame. |
| take-up reel | right next to the film advance sprocket. It's a small tube with slits in it . |
| lens | the camera's eye. |
| focusing ring | allows you to bring your subject in or out of focus. |
| depth of field scale | a ring that doesn't move, usually next to the f-stop ring. |
| depth of field preview button | a button that temporarily closes the lens down to the f-stop you have selected, so you see exactly what the film will see. |
| self-timer | allows you to take a picture of yourself. |
| hot shoe | mounts the flash |
