| Window | A rectangle on your screen that displays information. It can contain little pictures, a document, or an application. |
| Icon | A little picture on your screen that you can clickon with your mouse. It can represent a file, program, or tool. |
| Menu | A list of possible choices. |
| Minimize | To reduce a window to a little picture on your screen. |
| Maximize | To enlarge a window to fill your whole screen. |
| Menu Bar | A strip across the top of a window, listing all the menus available in that program. |
| Title Bar | A horizontal strip at the top of a window that displays the name of the program and document you are using. If the window is active, it is highlighted. |
| Close | To shut down and remove a window or document from your screen. |
| Toolbar | A horizontal strip of buttons near the top of a window that provides shortcuts for commonly used commands. |
| Desktop | On a PC, the background behind all your windows, menus, and dialog boxes, which is supposed to represent a desk. |
| Multitasking | The ability of an operating system to run more than one program at a time. |
| Taskbar | A strip along the bottom of your screen in Windows. It displays the names of all your open windows and lets you quickly switch between windows. |
