| Trojan horse | A program with harmful code that is hidden inside a program that appears to be harmless. |
| Virus | A manmade program that is loaded on your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. |
| Database | A collection of information organized in a way that specific pieces of data can be selected. |
| Bluetooth | Technology that allows devices to communicate wirelessly |
| Multimedia | Use of computer to present text, graphics, video, animation, sound within the same presentation. |
| Search Engine | A program that searches the internet for a specific key word and returns a list of these websites that contain it. |
| GUI | A way to communicate with your computer, includes your mouse and all of the drop down menus and buttons that you click on. Stands for Graphic User Interface |
| AUP | A set of rules that a user agrees to follow on the computer. Stands for Acceptable Use Policy. |
| Jump Drive | Portable storage for files...aka. flash drive, thumb drive, USB drive, etc |
| USB | An easy way to connect devices to your computer |
| Peripherals | Pieces of hardware that you add to your computer (ie printer, scanner, mouse, camera, etc.) |
| Phishing (fishing) | An attempt to steal your personal information on the computer, usually through email |
| Spam | Electronic junk mail |
| Discussion Board | An online bulletin board where you can leave a question or comment in order to receive responses at a later time. |
| Wiki | A webpage/site that allows anyone that accesses it the abiity to add or change the content. |
| Blog | A webpage that serves as a personal journal. Often allows others to respond back. |
| Netiquette | Refers to how you should act when you are communicating on the internet |
| Icon | A small picture that you click on to open a program or file |
| Browser | A program that you use to view the interent |
| IP Address | Identifying number for every computer on the internet |
| Domain Name | The beginning part of a web address (usually ends at the .com or .net) |
| URL | Another name for a web address (Stands for uniform resource locator |
| Dialog box | The windows that open when you click on something to give you more options with that command. |
| Password Protect | In Excel, allows you to keep contents of a cell or worksheet from being edited |
| Worksheet | In Excel, a single page of a spreadsheet or workbook |
| Freeze panes | In Excel, allows headings to remain in place while scrolling through the data |
| Split Screen | In Excel, allows you to break up the window into multiple panes so you can see different parts of the workbook at the same time. |
| Fill | In Excel, a quick way to enter a consective list (ex. 1, 2, 3, 4) |
| Autosum | In Excel, a shortcut that calculates the sum of a list of numbers |
| Cell | In Excel, where a row and column meet. It is where you enter data |
| Spreadsheet | A grid with rows and columns that allows you to organize data |
| WYSIWYG | A program that allows you to see what a web page will look like as it is being created. |
| Attribute | In a database, a single piece of data related to an object. (Ex your ID number is an ____ of you) |
| Macro | Keyboard shortcuts that you create that allow you to do a repetitive task easily |
| Formula | In Excel, allows you to calculate the answer to a math problem automatically |
| Drivers | A program that allows your computer and a peripheral to communicate with each other |
| Query | A search for a specific piece of information from a database |
| Wizard | A step by step guide to walk you through a particular task |
| Format painter | The paintbrush icon that allows you to copy formatting (bold, font, size) to other text |
| Ergonomics | The design of items so that they are both safe and efficient to use. |
| Server | A device on a network that manages that network. It is often where information is stored on a network so it can be accessed elsewhere. |
| Switch | A piece of hardware that connects multiple computers together in a network |
| RJ 45 Wall Jack | The jack in the wall that you plug your computer in to access the network or internet |
| Network Cable | Also known as a patch cable...A cord that connects your computer to the wall jack to access |
