General Math Terms

AB
DiscountA percentage of the original price.
Discount PriceThe original price minus the discount.
ExpressionA word used to designate and symbolic mathematical phrase that may contain numbers and/or variables; does not contain an equal sign.
IntegersThe set of whole numbers and their opposites.
Irrational NumbersThe set of all non-repeating, non-terminating decimals.
Natural NumbersThe set of counting numbers ( 1, 2, 3,…)
Numerical ExpressionContains only numbers and the operations on those numbers.
PercentA special ratio in which the denominator is 100.
Perfect SquareA whole number whose square root is a whole number.
PowerRepeated multiplication of a number.
Rational NumbersThe set of all numbers that can be expressed as fractions in the form a/b where a and b are integers and b does not equal zero.
Real NumbersThe set of all rational and irrational number.
Scientific NotationUsed to represent very large or very small numbers; the product of two factors: a decimal greater than or equal to one but less than 10 multiplied by a power of 10.
Square RootThe number which when multiplied by itself equals the number.
Two-Step EquationAn equation that requires the use of two different operations to solve.
Two-Step InequalityAn inequality that requires the use of two different operations to solve.
Whole NumbersThe set of all the natural numbers and zero.
