| Insertion point | A blinking vertical line in a document that indicates where the next character typed will be placed. |
| Menu | A list of commands. |
| Menu bar | A horizontal bar below the title bar that contains the names of drop-down menus. |
| Microsoft Word | The word processor application in Microsoft Office. |
| Normal view | Displays a document with dotted lines representing where each page ends. |
| Print Layout view | Displays a document on separate pages, just as it will appear when printed. |
| Opening a file | The process of transferring a copy of the file contents to the computers memory and then displaying it in a window. |
| Overwrite | Replacing the original file with the changed file. |
| Quitting Word | The process of removing the Word program from the computers memory and from the screen. |
| Rulers | Located at the top and left side of the document window, and contain markers used for formatting text. |
| Saving a document | The process of creating a file of what is currently in the computers memory. |
| ScreenTip | A description of the action that a button on the toolbar will perform. |
| Scroll bars | Used to scroll a document one screen up or down. |
| Scroll box | Used to move a document in large increments. |
| Smart tag | Text in a document with a purple dotted underline that has been assessed by Word to be one of several types of data commonly used in other applications. |
| Smart tag indicator | A purple dotted underline that appears under text that has been designated by Word as a smart tag. |
| Status bar | Displays information about a document. |
| Title bar | A horizontal bar that displays the name and type of document. |
| Toolbar | A horizontal bar that contains buttons that represent different actions. |
| Word Processor | A computer application that is used to produce documents. |
| Word wrap | The process Word uses to determine if the next word will fit on the end of the current line or if it must go on the next line. |
| Close command | Closes a document. Found in the File menu. |
| Exit command | Quits Word. Found in the File menu. |
| Ignore All command | Removes the red wavy line from all occurrences of that word in the document. Found in the menu displayed by right-clicking a word that has a red wavy line. |
| Ignore Once command | Removes the green wavy line from a sentence that contains a possible grammatical error. Found in the menu displayed by right-clicking a phrase or sentence that has a green wavy line. |
| New Office Document command | Displays the New Office Document dialog box. Found in the Start menu. |
| Normal command | Changes the view of a document to Normal view. Found in the View menu. |
| Open command | Displays a dialog box used to open an existing document. Found in the File menu. The Open button on the toolbar can be used instead of the command. |
