Career and technical education (CTE)Organized educational activities delivered in a sequence of courses. The courses provide students with academic knowledge, technical knowledge and skills. The goal is to prepare individuals for further education and/or careers in current or emerging employment sectors. CTE programs integrate academics into the occupational curriculum, along with specific skill training and work-based learning.
Effective teachingTeaching that is based on best practices in education (research-based models) and supports divergent student learning and understanding.
Creative thinkingA quality of the mind that is related to intelligence and unconventional thinking; comes in many forms in areas of the arts, science, athletics, and manual activities.
Critical thinkingComplex higher-level thinking that is based on standards of objectivity, utility or consistency.
Reactive thinkingResponsive thinking that answers questions, exercises, and test items with a set of preferred answers; is in contrast to inquiry-based models of questioning and thinking.
Teaching (institutional) paradigmThe theoretical approach to education that focuses on the tasks of teaching and transfer of knowledge; teachers have students who look busy and get their work done.
Learning paradigmThe theoretical approach where teachers focus on whether students learn and how they are learning; teachers are facilitators of learning.
MetacognitionThinking about one’s own thinking and learning
Teacher standardsNine goal statements that identify a desired performance; each represents the essential knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes that must be demonstrated in order to be successful teacher. These form the bases of teacher preparation in the state and of licensure requirements; each is compatible with national standards for teaching.
Career ExplorationStudents can explore careers and attain academic and technical skills in grades 7-9 through career planning and learning about facets of technical education foundations.
