Chapter 7 – The Cell and Cell Structures

Biology
Grade 9
Winchester High School

AB
Cell, The basic unit of all forms of life
Cell TheoryAll living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things, and new cells are produced from existing cells
Cell MembraneA thin flexible barrier around the cell
Cell WallA strong layer around the cell membrane
NucleusA large structure that contains cells genetic material
CytoplasmThe material inside the cell membrane (not including the nucleus)
ProkaryotesHave cell membranes and cytoplasm, but do not contain nuclei
EukaryotesCells that contain nuclei
OrganellesSpecialized structures within the cell that perform important cellular functions
ChromatinThe granular material visible within the nucleus, consisting of DNA bound to protein
ChromosomesChromatin in its condensed form
NucleolusA small dense region within the nucleus where ribosome assembly begins
Nuclear EnvelopeA double membrane layer that surrounds the nucleus, allowing material to move into and out of the nucleus
MicrotubulesHollow tubes of protein that maintain cell shape
MicrofilamentsLong thin fibers in the movement and support of the cell
RibosomeA small particle made up of RNA and protein that produce proteins following coded instructions that come from the nucleus
Endoplasmic ReticulumAn internal membrane system in which components of the cell membrane are assembled and some proteins are modified
Golgi ApparatusStacked rough endoplasmic reticulums that attach carbohydrates to proteins. From here, proteins are sent to their final destinations
LysosomeSmall organelles filled with enzymes that break down (digest) lipids, carbohydrates and proteins from food into particles that can be used by the cell
VacuoleA sac-like structure which stores water, salts, proteins and carbohydrates for the cell
ChloroplastUse the energy from the sunlight to make energy-rich food molecules in a process known as photosynthesis
MitochondriaOrganelles that release energy from stored food molecules, use energy from food to make high-energy compounds (e.g. ATP)
