Input, Processing, Output and Storage Devices

These games will prepare you to compare, contrast, and appropriately use the various input, processing, output and primary/secondary storage devices (objective 1B).

disketteThe most common storage device used with microcomputers. Most floppy disks are
secondary storageExternal storage including, but not limited to, floppy disk, hard drive, DAT, optical drive, file server,CD-ROM disc.
CD-ROMCD-ROM readers make available to the computer the large amounts of digitally encoded information stored on the round CD-ROM disks.
disk driveThe device that reads from and writes to a floppy disk or hard disk.
hardwareThe physical equipment of a computer, such as the screen/monitor, the keyboard, the central processing unit (CPU),and the storage devices.
keyboardAn input device resembling a typewriter and consisting of a standardized layout of buttons or keys with symbols, such as letters or numbers, that can be entered into a computer by pressing on the keys.
laserdiscA disc that has recorded sound, pictures and video which is read on a laserdisc player with a laser beam.
monitorA display screen designed as an output device for a computer and usually composed of a Cathode Ray Tube.
mouseAn input device using a ball instead of keys that allows the user to move the cursor quickly and to choose preselected commands by clicking.
peripheralAny external device that plugs into your computer such as a printer, modem, scanner, or tape drive.
printerA mechanical output device that can print text and graphics on paper.
saveTo store a file on secondary storage medium for future use.
scannerA peripheral device that converts text or pictures into bit-mapped data that is put into a computer. The digitized images can then be edited.
sound/voice recorderA device that attaches to a computer and accepts sound and voice input.
touch screenAllows users to enter instructions by touching a menu selection or indicating which text to
track padPointing device used as an alternative to a mouse.
central processing unitPart of the computer system that manipulates/changes data.
