| A | B |
| organ system | organs work together in groups to perform particular jobs examples - digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system |
| multicellular | an organism that can exist only as a group of cells and most cells can only survive if they remain part of the body. |
| population | a group of organisms of the same kind that live in the same area |
| organ | the group of tissues working together examples: stomach, intestines, heart, lungs, & skin |
| community | two or more different populations living in the same area |
| tissue | a group of cells working together to perform a specific job in the body. examples: fat, blood, muscle |
| ecosystem | a community and all the nonliving things that affect it, such as water, soil, rocks, temperature, and light |
| organism | anything that can live on its own |
| unicellular | an organism (can live on its own) that is made of one cell only |
| organelles | chemicals and structures in the cell that enable the cell to live, grow, and reproduce |
| cell membrane | all cells are surrounded by this. It is the barrier between the inside of the c ell and the cell’s environment. |
| prokaryotic | cells that do not have a nucleus (bacteria) |
| bacteria | the world’s smallest cells. They do not have a nucleus so they are prokaryotic cells |
| cytoplasm | the fluid inside the cell and almost everything it |
| nucleus | a membrane covered organelle that holds the cell’s DNA |
| eukaryotic | cells that do have a nucleus (all organisms except bacteria) |
| cell wall | plant cells and algae have this hard outer coating made of cellulose. It provides strength and support to the cell membrane. |
| Chloroplast | plants and algae have this organelle. Chlorophyll in this organelle makes it green. Chlorophyll traps sunlight and is used to make sugar through a process called photosynthesis |
| ribosome | smallest and most abundant organelles. Amino acids are hooked together at this organelle to make protein. All cells have these because all cells need protein |
| mitochondria | ATP can be made several places inside the cell, but is most often made here. These organelles are surrounded by two membranes. The inner membrane which has many folds in it (where ATP is made) and the outer membrane. |
| Golgi Complex | - Proteins and other materials are processed and shipped out of the cell at this organelle. It sort of looks like ER, but is closer to the membrane. |
| Lysosomes | a special vesicle in animal cells that contains enzymes. These special vesicles can destroy worn out or damaged organelles, get rid of waste materials, and protect from foreign invaders. |
| vesicles | membrane covered compartments within the cell that are used to surround an object outside the cell. |
| Vacuole | plants cells have this very large membrane covered chamber. It stores water and other liquids. |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | membrane covered compartment that makes lipids and other materials needed by the cell |
