| Theme | The universal truth /main understanding/ main point of the novel. |
| Tone | The attitude of the writer toward his or her topic/characters, etc. |
| Style | The way the writer writes, which includes figurative language, tone, vivid words, etc. |
| Foreshadowing | A clue that something bad will happen later in the story. |
| Symbolism | Objects used to represent something beyond itself in the story. |
| Irony | When something unexpected happens that is the total opposite of what you expect in a story, but which sometimes carries some humor, bitterness or sadness. |
