PERIODIC TABLE | a table with all the elements listed on it, organized by increasing atomic numbers |
GROUP OF FAMILIES | elements in a column that go up and down (there are 18 groups/families) |
PERIODS | row of elements that go side to side |
ELEMENT KEY | the little boxes on the periodic table that have the different elements inside them. |
ATOMIC NUMBER | the top number in each element key that helps tell what the element is |
CHEMICAL SYMBOL | the 1 or 2 letter(s) in the element key boxes that represent the element |
ATOMIC MASS | the bottom number in each element key that tells you the mass of one atom of that element |
ELEMENT NAME | the name of the element |
STATE OR PHASE OF MATTER | soild, liquid, or gas |
ELEMENT | a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance |
PERIOD/ROW | the hotizontal rows to the left or right of the elements that change predictibly and gradually from left to right |
GROUP/FAMILY/COLUMN | the vertical columns of the element that are grouped by similar physical and chemical propertiers there are 18 groups/familys/coulumns |
NONMETALS | a category of elements that are on the RIGHT side of the periodic table and have similar properties |
METALS | a category of elements that are on the middle and left side of the periodic table and have similar properties |
METALOIDS | a catergory of elements that are on the zig zag line of the periodic table. Have both characteristics of metals and nonmetals |
NOBLE GASES | a special group of nonmetals that are in the group 18; they are called the noble gases because they dont react with any other element. There are 6 noble gasses. |
CHEMICAL CHANGE | changes a substance |
TARNISH | to dull the luster or to discolor when exposed to air |
DENSITY | an objects's ration of its mass to volume determines if it can float |
PHASE OF MATTER | solid, liquid, gass |
PHYSICAL PROPERTY | characteristic that can be observed with 5 senses |
PHYSICAL CHANGE | change in form or appearance but still the same substance |
ROW/PERIOD | Contains elements horizontally whose properties change gradually and predictably |
CHEMICAL EQUATION | SUMMARY OF WHAT HAPPENS IN A CHEMICAL REACTION |
OXIDATION | a reaction involving oxygen |
COMBUSTIBLE | capable of igniting, burning, or exploding |
SYNTHETIC | man-made |
MIXTURE | combination of compounds or elements that has not formed a new substance; can be physically separated |
ATOM | the smallest unit of an element |
CHEMICAL PROPERTY | characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance |
