Computer Science 7- Exam Review
Computer termnology, exercises, and history.
|
| A | B |
| Generation 1- Main Computers | The Vacum Tube, Eniac, and the Edvac |
| Eniac | Very Big, 18,000 vacuum tubes, made by Alan Turing, Weighed over 30 tons,to reprogram it you would have to rewire the whole thing. Tubes died every 15 minutes |
| Vacuum Tube: | Cousin of the lightbulb, VERY HOT require cooling, expensive, Unreliable, Slow, and consume massive amounts of power. |
| Edvac: | Created by John van Newman, could store programs in memory. |
| Generation 2: | TRANSISTOR |
| Transistor: | Was invented at bell laboratories, performed the same job as the tube, but was faster and cheaper and rarely ever went out, were 100 times smaller than the Vacuum Tube. |
| Third Generation: | The Intergrated Circuit, Microprocessor |
| Microprocessor: | Very large scale intergration Computer on a chip Faster, Cheaper, smaller, and consumes less power. |
| The Intergrated Circuit | 100's of circuit packed into one unit, also known as the chip. |
| THE DESKTOP COMPUTERS WERE BORN | THE DESKTOP COMPUTERS ARE BORN |
| 4th Generation: | Supercomputers, Mainframes, Minicomputers, Microcomputers. |
| Supercomputers: | Government, University are the primary users. Every second mainframes can add up to 100,000,000,000 numbers in a second. They have special power/ cooling requirements. |
| Mainframes: | Need special power/ cooling needs: But can only do 1,000,000 comp. per second |
| Minicomputer: | Size of a college fridge |
| Microcomputer: | Single User, Desktop, Laptop, Workstation. |
