Computer termnology, exercises, and history.

AB
Generation 1- Main ComputersThe Vacum Tube, Eniac, and the Edvac
EniacVery Big, 18,000 vacuum tubes, made by Alan Turing, Weighed over 30 tons,to reprogram it you would have to rewire the whole thing. Tubes died every 15 minutes
Vacuum Tube:Cousin of the lightbulb, VERY HOT require cooling, expensive, Unreliable, Slow, and consume massive amounts of power.
Edvac:Created by John van Newman, could store programs in memory.
Generation 2:TRANSISTOR
Transistor:Was invented at bell laboratories, performed the same job as the tube, but was faster and cheaper and rarely ever went out, were 100 times smaller than the Vacuum Tube.
Third Generation:The Intergrated Circuit, Microprocessor
Microprocessor:Very large scale intergration Computer on a chip Faster, Cheaper, smaller, and consumes less power.
The Intergrated Circuit100's of circuit packed into one unit, also known as the chip.
THE DESKTOP COMPUTERS WERE BORNTHE DESKTOP COMPUTERS ARE BORN
4th Generation:Supercomputers, Mainframes, Minicomputers, Microcomputers.
Supercomputers:Government, University are the primary users. Every second mainframes can add up to 100,000,000,000 numbers in a second. They have special power/ cooling requirements.
Mainframes:Need special power/ cooling needs: But can only do 1,000,000 comp. per second
Minicomputer:Size of a college fridge
Microcomputer:Single User, Desktop, Laptop, Workstation.
