Immigration | the movement of the individuals into an area |
Emigration | the movement of individuals out of an area |
Exponential growth | is when the individuals in a population reproduce at a constant rate. |
Over time , the population becomes larger and larger until it approaches an infinitely larger size. | This is because the more it grows , the more individuals there are that are reproducing. This happens when there are ideal conditions and unlimited resources (what a population needs to survive) are available. |
In a graph the J curve | indicates that a population is growing exponentially. |
Carrying capacity | when looking at a graph, you will see a horizontal line through the region of the graph where the growth of population has leveled off. The point at which that line intersects with the y axis tells you the size of the population when the average growth rate reached zero. |
Limiting factors are factors that | limit the growth of a population. |
Density dependent limiting factor | are factors like competition, predation , parasitism, and disease. This factors are only limiting to a population when the population density ( the number of organisms per unit are) is large and dense. If a population is dense these factors do not affect the population very much. |
