ProtagonistThe main character in the story, play, or novel that is involved in the main conflict
AntagonistThe force working against the protagonist; usually another character but can be a force of nature, society, or an internal force within the main character
PlotThe series of events in a story
ExpositionThe first stage of a typical story plot; provides important background information and introduces the setting and important characters
Rising ActionThe stage of plot that develops the conflict; during this stage events occur that make the conflict more complicated
ClimaxThe point of greatest interest in a story or play; Usually occurs toward the end of a story, after the reader has understood the conflict and become emotionally involved with the characters; the conflict is usually resolved
ConflictA struggle between opposing forces; internal or external
Character TraitsThe qualities shown by a character; may be physical or expressions of personality
CharacterizationThe way a writer creates and develops character
Falling ActionThe stage of the plot in which the story begins to draw to a close; comes after the climax
SettingThe time and place of the action
CharactersThe people, animals, or imaginary creatures who take part in the action of a work of literature
ResolutionReveals how everything turns out. Sometimes ends with a surprise twist.
ParodyA humorous imitation of an author's or artist's style.
Cause & EffectTwo events are related by something happening.
FactA statement that can be proven.
OpinionA statement that cannot be proven - what you believe or feel.
Text FeaturesElements of a text, such as bold, italic, subheadings, captions, etc.
Graphic AidA visual tool that is printed or drawn. Charts, graphs, maps etc.
InferenceA logical guess that is made based o facts and one's own knowledge and experience.
Point of ViewRefers to how a writer chooses to narrae a story.
First Person Point of ViewUses pronouns, such as I, me, and we.
Third Person Point of ViewThe narrator is not a character, uses words such as they, she, her, etc
Foreshadow"Hint". Give notice or indication of something going to happen in advance.
FlashbackA scene or event from the past.
AtlasA book of road maps
EncyclopediaA book of various branches of knowledge or topics.
AlmanacA yearly calendar showing the times of certain events such as fishing, birthdays, farming.
IntensityAn extreme amount of energy or feelings.
Reference MaterialsSources that contain facts and background information on a wide range of subjects, (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, etc)
