child laborWorkers of age 8 or 9 because parents needed their wages. They worked without safety regulations and were 3 times more likely to get hurt than adults. They worked in coal mines, textile mills, etc.
unionsAn organization of employees formed to bargain with the employer.
American Federation of LaborThey pushed for higher wages, shorter hours and better working conditions. It was strongest in the skilled trade. They preferred bargaining over striking.
strikeSuspend work until an employer agrees to certain demands such as pay increases and few working hours.
Homestead Strike1892, 13 men were killed in a battle between striking steelworkers and strikebreakers at Carnegie's Homestead steel plant in Pittsburgh. It turned many Americans against unions and organized labor which they blamed for the violence.
women's suffrageThe right for women to vote
19th AmendmentIn 1920 this made it illegal for any state or for the federal government to deny women the right to vote.

Susan B. AnthonyOne of the leaders of the women's suffrage movement and fought for women to win the right to vote.
Temperence MovementWanted to limit or ban the use of alcohol. Thought drinking was a serious threat to family life. Mostly Protestants. Associated drinking with Irish Catholics.
18th AmendmentAdopted in 1919, it banned manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol.
