We use "How much" in a question when the amount we want to know is uncountable.

We can interpret "much" in different ways. It depends on how much you think is a lot.

How much soup is there?

There is a lot of soup. (The bowl of soup is more than three quarters full).

How much soup is there?

There is only a little soup. (The bowl of soup is less than half full)

If we do not know it is a lot or a little soup, we can say

There is some soup.

We use "a little" and "much" to refer to uncountable nouns only. This means nouns that you can not count.
