Chapter 7 Vocabulary

AB
baseThe two congruent, parallel faces on a prism or cylinder, or the bottom face of a pyramid or cone.
centerThe given point from which all points on a sphere are the same distance.
coneA three-dimensional figure with curved surfaces, a circular base and one vertex.
cubic unitsUsed to measure volume and tells the number of cubes of a given size that will fill a three-dimensional figure.
cylinderA three-dimensional figure with all curved surfaces, two circular bases and no vertices.
edgeThe intersection of faces of a three-dimensional figure. (a line)
faceThe flat surface of a three-dimensional figure.
heightThe shortest distance from the base of a parallelogram to its opposite side.
lateral faceA side of a three-dimensional figure that is not a base.
prismA three-dimensional figure that has two parallel and congruent bases in the shape of polygons and at least three lateral faces shaped like rectangles. The shape of the bases tells the name of this figure.
pyramidA solid figure that has a polygon for a base and triangles for sides. It is named for the shape of its base.
sphereA three-dimensional figure with no faces, bases, edges, or vertices. All of its points are the same distance from a given point called the center.
surface areaThe sum of the areas of all the surfaces (faces) of a three-dimensional figure.
three-dimensional figureA figure that encloses a part of space.
vertex (vertices)The point where three or more edges of a three-dimensional figure intersect.
volumeThe amount of space that a three-dimensional figure contains. It is expressed in cubic units.
planeA two-dimensional flat surface that extends in all directions.
solidA three-dimensional figure.
polyhedronA solid with flat surfaces that are polygons.
square unitsUsed to measure area of a 2-dimensional figure or surface area of a 3-dimensional object.
