| prophase | nucleus breaks down, chromosomes coil and clump, pairs ofcentrioles form at one pole |
| metaphase | one pair of centrioles moves to the other side of the cell, chromosomes line up in the middle, spindle fibers attach at the center of each chromosome |
| Anaphase | spindle fibers contract splitting each chromosomes to each side of the cell |
| telophase | nucleus reforms, centrioles disappear, chromosomes uncoil |
| cytokinesis | actual split creating two separate cells |
