MISSOURI COMPROMISE of 1820Missouri wanted to enter the Union as a slave state. In order to keep the number of slave and free states equal, Maine would enter as a free state.
COMPROMISE OF 1850Resolved slavery issue in new lands gained in war with Mexico. Californians would be allowed to join the Union as a free state. In the rest of the new lands, the people would decide.
KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACTChanged the rules of the Missouri compromise to allow people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves on the slavery issue by voting (popular sovereignty).
