A | B |
Volcano | An opening in the earths crust through which an eruption of lava, ash, and cinders take place |
Vent | A weak area in rock that become an opening through which magma can escape |
Magma | molten rock, found int he mantle and the core of the earth |
Lava | magma that reaches the earths surface during volcani eruptions |
igneous Rock | Rock formed when magma from the mantle escapes throught the crusts, cools and then hardens |
Crater | The circular depression or hole formed by the eruption of a volcano |
Ash | Fine magma dust released from a volcano during an explosive eruption |
Sedimentary Rock | Rocks formed when layers of sediment are squeezed and cemented together |
Sediment | small particles of soil and rock |
Erosion | the process where particles of weathered rock are carried away by wind, water, or glaciers |
Deposition | the process where sediments are dropped or released when the force that is carrying them slows down or stops |
Soil | loose weathered material on the surface of the earths crust in which plants can grow |
Mechanical Weathering | 1. The physical breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces 2.Agents: wind, water, pressure, temp, and plants |
Chemical Weathering | The breakdown of rocks caused by chemical reactions with other substances; results in a change in the chemical composition of the rock- agents: oxygen, acid rain, rainwater |
Rock | a naturally formed solid, ususally made up of many different minerals that are fused together |
Outer Core | The layer of earth located between the inner core and the mantles |
Mantle | The layer of rock between the outer core and the earths crust |
Inner core | The innermost layer of the earth |
Crust | outermost layer of the earth; contains the continents and the oceans |
Theory of the Contiental Drift | 1. Proposed in the 1915 by German Scientist Alfred Wegener. 1. States the continents are not stationary, but actually move very, very slowly across the face of the earth |
Pangaea | The name German scientist Alfrend Wegener gave to the super continent he believed existed before it broke up to form the continents |
Glacier | A huge mass of ice that moves very slowly, picking up rocks and soil in its path and depositing them when it melts |
Fossil | The remains, impressions or other evidence of a once living organism preserved in rock |
