IES CELL ORGANELLE VOCABULARY TERMS

PLEASE PRINT OUT THE LIST OF TERMS AND WRITE THEM ON FLASH CARDS. START STUDYING.....THERE ARE 24 TERMS YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR THIS UNIT.

AB
CELL THEORYAll living things are made of cells, all cells come from other cells, the cell is the basic unit of life
CELLBasic unit of structure and function in living things
CELL ORGANELLESmall structure in the cytoplasm that does a special job
CELL MEMBRANE (PLASMA MEMBRANE)Thin structure that surrounds a cell. It is semipermiable (lets some stuff in and some stuff out)
CELL WALLThick outer layer of cellulose that surrounds the cell membranes of the plants and some simple organisms; found in plant cells
CYTOPLASMgel-like substance inside the cell where most of the cell's activities take place
EUKARYOTICCell that contains a nucleus (everything except bacteria cells)
PROKARYOTICCells that do NOT contain a nucleus; bacteria/monera
MONERA/BACTERIAunicellular organisms that do not have a nucleus or other organelles. They have ribosomes
RIBOSOMESmall, round structure that makes proteins; found in the cytoplasm of the cell
LYSOSOMESmall, round structure that breaks down nutrient molecules and old cell parts; contains enzymes that break up the materials in the cell
GOLGI BODIESOrganelle that packages and sends proteins or vesicles out of the cell
MITOCHONDRIAStructure that releases energy for a cell; breaks down sugar for energy for the cell; powerhouse of the cell
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUMSmall network of tubes inside a cell that substances move through. Acts as a transport system for proteins (rough ER) or fats (smooth ER)
NUCLEUSControl center of a cell; stores DNA, present in Eukaryotic cells
DNALarge molecule contained in chromosomes
NUCLEOLUSOrganelle inside of the nucleus that makes RNA
CHLOROPLASTOrganelle in a plant cell that contains chlorophyll; uses sunlight to trap energy; makes food for the plant and all other living things that eat the plant; makes glucose; sugar
VACUOLESpace in the cytoplasm that stores food/water/waste in a cell; small in animals; large in plants
CENTRIOLEOrganelle found in animal cells that are involved in cell division
CILIAShort, hairlike organelle that extends from a cell and functions in locomotion or in the movement of substances across the cell surface
PSEUDOPODIA"fake arm" Amoebas are a great example; they have a fingerlike extension of the cytoplasm and cell membrane that extend out to bring in food and liquid into a cell
FLAGELLAHairlike structure made up of microtubules that function in locomotion
CELL SPECIALIZATION (DIFFERENTIATION) see p. 48The change in mophology, physiology, or function of a cell in relation to its neighboring cells
