| A | B |
| CELL THEORY | All living things are made of cells, all cells come from other cells, the cell is the basic unit of life |
| CELL | Basic unit of structure and function in living things |
| CELL ORGANELLE | Small structure in the cytoplasm that does a special job |
| CELL MEMBRANE (PLASMA MEMBRANE) | Thin structure that surrounds a cell. It is semipermiable (lets some stuff in and some stuff out) |
| CELL WALL | Thick outer layer of cellulose that surrounds the cell membranes of the plants and some simple organisms; found in plant cells |
| CYTOPLASM | gel-like substance inside the cell where most of the cell's activities take place |
| EUKARYOTIC | Cell that contains a nucleus (everything except bacteria cells) |
| PROKARYOTIC | Cells that do NOT contain a nucleus; bacteria/monera |
| MONERA/BACTERIA | unicellular organisms that do not have a nucleus or other organelles. They have ribosomes |
| RIBOSOME | Small, round structure that makes proteins; found in the cytoplasm of the cell |
| LYSOSOME | Small, round structure that breaks down nutrient molecules and old cell parts; contains enzymes that break up the materials in the cell |
| GOLGI BODIES | Organelle that packages and sends proteins or vesicles out of the cell |
| MITOCHONDRIA | Structure that releases energy for a cell; breaks down sugar for energy for the cell; powerhouse of the cell |
| ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM | Small network of tubes inside a cell that substances move through. Acts as a transport system for proteins (rough ER) or fats (smooth ER) |
| NUCLEUS | Control center of a cell; stores DNA, present in Eukaryotic cells |
| DNA | Large molecule contained in chromosomes |
| NUCLEOLUS | Organelle inside of the nucleus that makes RNA |
| CHLOROPLAST | Organelle in a plant cell that contains chlorophyll; uses sunlight to trap energy; makes food for the plant and all other living things that eat the plant; makes glucose; sugar |
| VACUOLE | Space in the cytoplasm that stores food/water/waste in a cell; small in animals; large in plants |
| CENTRIOLE | Organelle found in animal cells that are involved in cell division |
| CILIA | Short, hairlike organelle that extends from a cell and functions in locomotion or in the movement of substances across the cell surface |
| PSEUDOPODIA | "fake arm" Amoebas are a great example; they have a fingerlike extension of the cytoplasm and cell membrane that extend out to bring in food and liquid into a cell |
| FLAGELLA | Hairlike structure made up of microtubules that function in locomotion |
| CELL SPECIALIZATION (DIFFERENTIATION) see p. 48 | The change in mophology, physiology, or function of a cell in relation to its neighboring cells |
