8:Ignition Systems (p.121 - 138) Part 2 of 3
Games designed to help students build scientific & automotive technology vocabulary when describing ignition systems.

AB
Projected Nose Spark Plug(1)A spark plug design with a longer electrode tip which extends further into the combustion chamber.
Resistor Spark PlugA spark plug in which the spark is delivered in two stages.
Distributor Cap(1)A plastic insulated cap containing a central terminal with a series of evenly spaced outer terminals in a circle around it.
Ignition RotorA rotating contact that routes secondary current from the coil to the individual spark plug wires.
Spark Plug WiresA series of heavy guage insulated wires used to carry high voltage from the distributor to the spark plugs.
Ignition TimingThe relationship between the exact time a plug is fired & the position of the piston (degrees of crankshaft rotation).
Retarded TimingIf the spark plug fires later than specified.
Advanced TimingIf the spark plug fires earlier than specified.
Timing LightA strobe lamp used to set the timing of the number one spark plug.
Magnetic Timing MeterA tachometer that uses magnetism as a triggering device.
Centifugal Advance MechanismA series of weights used to advance engine timing as engine speed increases. Eg: a Governer
Vacuum Advance MechanismA mechanism installed inside a distributor that can advance and retard ignition timing in response to engine vacuum pressure.
Electronic Advance MechanismA more modern system that uses an on-board engine control computer to adjust the timing.
Projected Nose Spark Plug(2)Due to its long tip this spark plug design tends to run hot at low engine speeds since the incoming fuel charge provides little cooling effect.
Resistor Spark Plug Ops(1st stage)Voltage at the plugs center electrode rises rapidly to ionize the gap causing the plug to fire (combustion).
Resistor Spark Plug Ops(2nd stage)This stage of Resistor Plug Operation causes radio interference & causes electrodes to wear.
Distributor Cap(2)Used to distribute secondary voltage to the spark plugs.
TachometerDevice used to measure engine speed in RPM (Rotations Per Minute).
