Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors

| Comet | Chunks of ice and dust whose orbits are usually very long, narrow ellipses. |
| Nucleus, Coma, Tail | Parts of a comet. |
| Asteroid | Objects that are too small and numerous to be planets. Most of these revolve around the sun in the asteroid belt. |
| Asteroid belt | Located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. |
| Meteor | When a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere, friction makes it burn up and produce the streak of light you see in the sky. |
| Meteroid | Chunk of rock or dust in space that comes from a comet or asteroid. |
| Meteorite | Meteoroid that passes through the atmosphere and hits Earth's surface. |
| "Dirty Snowball" | nickname for a comet because its made of ice and dust. |
