mega- | means "great" and "large" |
en- and em- | means "in," "into," and "with" |
in-, -im- | means "in" |
intro- and intra- | means "in" and "into" |
semi-, hemi- | means "half" |
multi-, poly- | means "many" |
prefix | an affix (group of letters) placed before a base or another prefix, as un- in unkind, un- and re- in unrewarding |
affix | something that is joined or attached (example: prefixes and suffixes are affixes because they are joined to root words) |
root | the form of a word after all affixes are removed (example: organize is the root word of disorganization when you remove the prefix dis- and the suffix -ation) |
suffix | an affix that follows the element to which it is added, as -ly in kindly |
