Fort SumterApril 12, 1861. Civil war started here. abe called for 75,000 volunteers to put down the south. the authorized spending for war. he suspended the privilege of habeas corpus.
Bull RunJuly 1861. First major Battle. In Virginia. union attacks, confederates counterattack. rebels won.
Antietam1862 Union army intercepted the invading confederates at this creek in Maryland. it was a draw but stopped the confederates from receiving aid from Britain. lincoln took this battle as a union victory and discussed Emancipation Proclamation.
Trent Affair1861 union warship stopped this british steamer and brought two british people aboard as prisoners of war.britain threatened war over the incident unless the two diplomats were released. Lincoln gave in to british demands.
Vicksburg1863 this battle was turning point of civil war. union made confederates surrender.
Gettyburg1863 Confederates attackd union but union won.
AppomattoxApril 9th, 1865. confederates surrendered. union won war.
Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction1863 South needed to take an oath of allegiance to union and us constitution and accept emancipation proclamation in order to be let back into the union. only 10% had to take the oath.
Wade-Davis Bill1864 50% of oath takers were needed for south to be let back into the union. lincoln vetoed this.
Freedmen's Bureau1865 welfare agency. it established over 3000 schools and colleges for freed blacks.
Black Codes1866ish. these restricted the rights of freed African Americans. 1. prohibited blacks from renting land/borrowing money to buy land. 2. placed freedmen into a form of semibondage by forcing them to sign work contracts. 3. prohibited blacks from testifying against whites in court.
Civil Right Acts1866 pronounced all African Americans to be US citizens.
14th Amendment1866 this amendment overruling the dred scott case. right to citizenship if you were born in america.
15th amendmentAfrican american males can vote.
Civil Rights Act of 18751875 guaranteed equal accomodations in public places.
Force Acts1870-1 These acts were passed to try to stop the KKK.
Amnesty Act of 18721872 removed ex-confederate restrcitions.
Compromise of 1877withdrew fed troops from south if north could get the president they wanted.
