| Zuider Zee (ZEYE duhr ZAY) | It was a part of the North Sea and now it is a Freshwater lake. Built dikes all across the entrance. Since no saltwater flowed into that body of water, it eventually became a freshwater lake called Ijsselmeer (EYE suhl MAIR) |

He was elected out of office and refused to go, so they protested until he left. Turning point in the long history of conflict in the Balkans. |

| ethnic cleansing | The policy of trying to eliminate an ethnic group through violence. Used by the Serbs to get rid of the Bosnia Muslims and Croats. More than 200,000 people dies & over 2 million left their homes. |
| KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) | a group that attacked Serbian officials. Started because Milosevic tried to assert control and wipe out its Albanian culture. |

| smog | brown haze that occurs when the gasses release by burning fossil fuels react with sunlight to create hundreds of harmful chemicals. |
