Zuider Zee (ZEYE duhr ZAY)It was a part of the North Sea and now it is a Freshwater lake. Built dikes all across the entrance. Since no saltwater flowed into that body of water, it eventually became a freshwater lake called Ijsselmeer (EYE suhl MAIR)

Slobodan Milosevic (SLOH buh DAHN muh LOH suh VICH)Serbian leader who tried to increase Serbia’s power over the rest of Yugoslavia. 4 republics lefts, many countries ended trading with them in protest, country grew poorer. He was elected out of office and refused to go, so they protested until he left. Turning point in the long history of conflict in the Balkans.
South SlavesSlavic people that migrated from Poland and Russia and settled in the Balkan Peninsula in 500AD and formed individual kingdoms. They are Croats, Slovenes, and Serbs.
ethnic cleansingThe policy of trying to eliminate an ethnic group through violence. Used by the Serbs to get rid of the Bosnia Muslims and Croats. More than 200,000 people dies & over 2 million left their homes.
KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army)a group that attacked Serbian officials. Started because Milosevic tried to assert control and wipe out its Albanian culture.
Vojislav Kostunica (VAW yee SLAHV kahsh TOO neet sah)a reform leader and president of Yugoslavia. Elected in 2000. Job was to keep peace after decades of wars.
cyanidea deadly poison. Was released by a gold mine in Romania, and flowed into the Tisza River in Hungary. Killed an estimated 80% of the fish.

particulatesvery small particles of liquid or sold matter. Found in air pollution.
smogbrown haze that occurs when the gasses release by burning fossil fuels react with sunlight to create hundreds of harmful chemicals.
