Simple SentenceHas one independent clause and no subordinate clauses.
Compound SentenceHas two or more independent clauses but no subordinate clauses.
Complex SentenceHas one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause.
Compound-Complex SentenceHas two or more independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause.
Declarative SentenceMakes a statement. It is followed by a period.
Interrogative SentenceAsks a question. It is followed by a question mark.
Imperative SentenceGives a command or makes a request. It is followed by a period.
Exclamatory SentenceShows excitement or expressed strong feeling. It is followed by an exclamation point.
SentenceHas a subject and predicate and make sense.
Run-on SentenceTwo complete sentences run together as if they were one.
FragmentDoes not have a subject , verb, or both and does not express a complete thought.
