| Headright System | An incentive system thought up by the VA Company of London to attract settlers to VA. Freemen were awarded 50 acres of land for every indentured servant that they paid for |
| Anne Hutchinson | A Puritan women who was banished from Massachusetts for claiming that she knew which ministers were saved and which were not |
| Indentured Servants | Mostly Englsih men and women who agreed to work on plantations for a fixed number of years. They then hoped to be able to buy their own land. |
| Indian Rebellion of 1622 | This was caused by Indian anger at rising English immigration after John Rolfe discovered a way to profit from tobacco |
| Iroquois | A group of Native American tribes who banded together and fought the French and their allies for control of the fur trade. They were based out of modern day NY state |

| King Phillip's War | A rebellion of Native Americans over land in 1670s New England. The war led to the death or forced removal of most Native Americans in the region |
| Maryland | Founded by George Calvert, this became a refuge for Catholics |
| Massachusetts Bay | A colony planted in 1630 by Puritans seeking religious freedom |
| Missions | Spanish settlements in their borderlands. Staffed by preists, they followed the unsuccessful military expeditions in the same areas |
| New France | A New World Empire based on the watersways of modern day Cabnada and the Mississippi River based on the fur trade |
| New Amsterdam | A Dutch settlement in NE America that served as the capital of New Netherlands. It was ceded to the British in the 1660s. |
| Pequot War | A war caused by the Puritans' expansion into the Connecticut River Valley and known for its brutalness. The Puritans massacred the Pequots at Mystic River in 1637. |
| Pilgrims | Separatists who landed at Plymouth in 1620 |

| Praying Towns | Puritans established these, attempting to convert Natives to Christianity |

| Slavery | Slowly developed in the South as the main form of labor used on plantations |
| Slave Codes | A set of laws that formally regulated slavery and defined the relationship between enslaved Africans and free people |
| John Smith | The "saviour" of the Jamestown colony |
| Town Meetings | These became the chief political organization in NE. Male church members would vote on laws etc. DIRECT DEMOCRACY |
| John Winthrop | An important Puritan leader who gave the famous sermon on the Arabella in 1630. he served as MA governor several times |
| Roger Williams | Banished by MA for his outspoken views on things like Puritans taking Indian lands, he established Rhode Island |
