Vocabulary Chapter 1

AB
absolute valueDistance from zero on a number line and is represented by |a|. Example: The absolute value of -2 is 2, or |-2| = 2.
algebraic expressionsAn expression consisting of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations.
compound inequalityTwo or more inequalities that are connected by the words and or or. Examples: x > 5 and x < 9; also written as 5 < x < 9.
empty setA set with no elements shown by the symbol { }. A solution set with no members. Also called a null set.
equationA mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal.
extraneous solutionResults that are not solutions to the original equation.
formulaAn equation that states a rule for the relationship between certain quantities. Example: is the formula for finding the area of a circle.
infinityLines and sets that never end.
integersThe set of whole numbers and their opposites {. . .-2, -1, 0, 1, 2. . .}.
intersectionThe set of elements common to two or more sets as in compound inequalities and Venn diagrams.
irrational numbersNumbers that cannot be expressed as fractions, terminating decimals, or repeating decimals.
natural numbersThe set {1, 2, 3, 4. . . }.
open sentenceA mathematical statement with one or more variables.
order of operationsPEMDAS
rational numbersThe set of numbers that can be written in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not equal to 0.
real numbersThe set of rational numbers and irrational numbers together.
set-builder notationA concise way of writing a solution set. Example: {t|t < 17} represents the set of all numbers t such that t is less than 17.
solutionA replacement value for the variable in an open sentence. A value for the variable that makes an equation true. Example: The solution of 12 = x + 7 is 5.
unionThe graph of a compound inequality containing the word or; the solution is a solution of either inequality, not necessarily both.
variablesA letter or other symbol used to represent an unspecified number or value.
whole numbersThe set {0, 1, 2, 3, ... }
