Math 6 - Chapter #1 Properties of Numbers

AB
Commutative Property of AdditionYou can add any #'s in any order. 7+6 = 6+7
Commutative Property of MultiplicationYou can multiply any #'s in any order. 7x6 = 6x7
Associative Property of AdditionWhen you are only adding, you can group any of the #'s together and the sum will be the same. (8+7)+1 = 8+(7+1)
Associative Property of MultiplicationWhen you are only multiplying, you can group any of the #'s together and the product will be the same. (8x7)x1 = 8x(7x1)
Additive Inverse PropertyThe sum any # and its opposite is zero. 5 + -5 = 0
Multiplicative Inverse PropertyFor any # except for 0, the product of a # and its reciprocal is 1. 2/3 x 3/2 = 1
Additive Identity PropertyThe sum of zero and any number is that number. 7+0 = 7
Multiplicative Identity PropertyThe product of one and any number is that number. 7x1 = 7
Multiplicative Property of ZeroThe product of any # and zero is zero. 5x0 = 0
Distributive Property of Multiplication over AdditionTo multiply a sum by a #, you can multiply each addend by the # and add the products. 2(3+6) = 2x3 + 2x6
