| Flat/One Dimensional | character receives little personality development; tends to be a supporting character |
| Dynamic | a character who changes, learns or grows due to the action or conflict of the story |
| Static | character who does not change |
| Protagonist | the main character of a story who must deal with the conflict |
| Antagonist | the character or force which causes conflict |
| Hero | a character admired for his /her achievement or noble qualities |
| Conflict | the struggle of opposing forces |
| Internal | a problem that occurs within the mind or body of the protagonist |
| External | a problem that occurs between the protagonist and an outside force |
| 1st person | a character relates the events from his/her perspective; used "I" and "we" |
| 2nd person | when a story is narrated using 'you" |
| 3rd person | an outside narrator rlates the events |
| Theme | a central meaning of the literary work; the message the author wants to get across |
