| IDE | A method of disk drive manufactureing that allows all the required controller circuiting in the drive itself |
| Enhanced IDE (EIDE) | Allows for two IDE channels that can each support two devices |
| AT Attachment (ATA) | Refers to the IBM-AT computer where this interface was first used. |
| ATA-33 | An extension to the ATA interace, will effectly double the top data transfer speed up to 33 |
| SCSI | A standard pathway used most comenly for hard drives and CDROM drives, but also a common interface for scanners and sometimes printers |
| Millisecond | usually used to measure the acess speed of hard disks |
| System hang | When a program fails, it usually has an oppurtionty to display an error. If the ystem fails then all key and mouse strokes will be ignored |
| POST | A group of ROM bios diagonstic tests that are preformed on a system each time its powered on |
| Cold Boot | To turn on or restart the cpu by turning it off, waiting a few seconds and turning it back on again |
| Warm Boot | To restart the comuter by pressing CTRL/ALT/DEL |
| Boot Disk | A write-protected floppy disk that contains the cpu's system and start up files |
| Boot Sector | A portion of a disk that contains the coded instructions for the operating systm to start the cpu |
| Safe Mode | Auto Loaded if Windows crashes during boot up. |
| scanner | A device used to copy an image from a physical source into a computer |
| LPT1 | the label used in MS-DOS assigned to Parallel Port 1 |
| COM1 | The label used in MS-DOS assigned to serial Port 1 |
| MTBF | This is a time, normally given in hours that predicts the failure of a device |
| Drive Interface | A collection of electical and logical connections between a hard drive and a PC |
| LUN | A unique indentifer for subdevuces assigned to a single SCSI ID |
| Display Adapter | A PC expansion board that converts the images created in the cpu to the electronic signals required by the moniter |
| VGA | The minimum standard for PC video display hich orginized with IBM's PS/2 models in 1987 |
| AT Commands | The modem command set developed by the Hayes company for use on its modems and now used in most modems |
| Asychronous | A bit sychronizatoin transmission technique that uses start and stop bits |
