Chapter 3 Terms

Terminology associated with moving objects

AB
AccelerationThe rate of change in velocity (speed and/or direction)
Average SpeedA rate of motion determined by dividing the distance traveled by travel time
Balanced ForcesForces that are equal in size and opposite in direction
Constant SpeedA rate of motion that does not vary
ForceA push or a pull exerted by one body on another
FrictionThe force that resists motion between two surfaces that are touching each other
GravityThe attracting force exerted by every object on every other object; dependent upon the masses of the objects and the distance between them
InertiaThe tendency of an object to resist any change in motion
Instantaneous SpeedThe rate of motion at any given instant
Net ForceThe resulting velocity of an object when multiple forces are applied to it
SpeedThe rate of motion, or the rate of change in position
VelocityThe rate of motion in a specific direction
WeightThe measure of the force of gravity on an object, usually the force between Earth and an object at its surface
