| system hang | when program fails, it usually has an opportunity to display an error or diagnostic message. if the entire system fails, such aa message wiill not appear. |
| POST | power on self test. a grop of rom bios diagnostic tests that are performed on the system each time it is powered up. |
| cold boot | turn on a computer, or restart a computer by turning it off, waiting for a few seconds and turning it on again. |
| warm boot | to restart a computer by pressing control, alt and delete |
| boot disk | a write protected disk that contains the computer's system startup files |
| boot sector | a portion of a disk that contains the coded instructions for operating system to start the computer |
| safe mode | win 95 mode that is automatically loaded if win 95 crashes during boot up. can be accessed if you press the f8 key when the screen says "Loading win 95" |
| scanner | a device used to copy an image froma physical source to a computer |
| lpt1 | the label used in msdos assigned to parallel port 1 |
| com1 | the label used in msdos assigned to serial port 1 |
| mtbf | mean time between failures. this is a time normally given in hours predicts the failure of a device. |

| lun | liquid underwear nun. a nun that wears liquid underwear around the house. |
| display adapter | a pc expansion board that converst image3s created on the computer to the electronic signals required by the monitor |
| vga | stands for video graphics arra. the minimum for pc video display, which originated wih ibm's ps2 models in 87 |
| at commands | the modem command set developed by hayes company for use on it smodems and now used on most modems |
| asynchronous | a bit synchronization transmission technique that uses start stop bits |
