| AT attachment (ATA) | More commonly known as IDE, the "AT" refers to the IBM-AT computer where this interface was first used. Also known as the ISA bus. This is a 16-bit data bus. |
| ATA-33 | an extension is the ATA interaface that will effectively double the top data transfer speed up to 33 Mbps. also known as ultra IDE |
| SCSI | small computer standard interface. A standard data pathway used mostly for hard drives and CD-ROM drives, but also a common interface for scanners and sometimes printers. |
| Millisecond | One thousandth of a second. Usally used to measure the access speed of the hard drives. |
| System Hang | When a program fails, it usally has an oppurtunity to display an error or diagnostic message. If the entire system fail, such a message will not appear and input is usally blocked and mouse clicks will be ignored. In the worst cases, the system cannot be restarted without turning the system off completly. |
| POST | Power on self test Test done on a system when it starts up. |
| Cold Boot | To turn on a computer, or restart a computer by turning it off, waiting a few seconds and turning it off again. |
| Warm Boot | To restart a computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete |
| Boot Disk | A write-protected floppy disk that contains the computer system and start up files. |
| Boot Sector | A portion of a disk that contains the coded instructions for the operating system to start the computer. |
| Safe Mode | This is Windows 95 mode that is automatically loaded id windows 95 crashes during boot up. You can access Safe Mode anytime if you press F8 key when screen says "Loading Windows 95." |
| Scanner | A device used to copy an image from physical source (such as a photograph) into a computer. |
| LPT1 | The label used in MS-DOS assigned to parrallel port one. |
| COM1 | The label used MS-DOS assigned to serial port. |
| MTBF | Mean time between failures. This is a time, normally given in hours, that predicts the failure of a device. |
| Drive Interface | A collection of electrical and logical connections between a hard drive and a PC. |
| LUN | (Logical Unit Number) The physical number of a device in a daisy chain of drives. |
| Display Adapter | A PC expansion board that converts the images created in the computer to the electronics signal required by the monitor. |
| VGA | Stands for Video Graphics Array. The minimum standard for PC video display, which originated with IBM's PS/2 models in 1987 |
| AT Commands | The modem command set developed by Hayes company for the use on its modems and now used on most modems. |
| Asynchronous | A bit synchronization transmission technique that uses start and stop bits. |
