Sentences and Complements

A review of sentences as classified by purpose and kind. Recognition of complements as words or groups of words that complete the meaning of a verb.

ComplementA word or group of words that completes the meaning of a verb.
Direct ObjectA noun or a pronoun that receives the action of the verb.
Indirect ObjectA noun or pronoun that comes between the verb and the direct object and tells to whom or for what the action the action of the verb is done.
Predicate NominativeA noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and identifies the subject or refers to it.
Predicate AdjectiveAn adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject.
Simple SentenceHas one independent clause and no subordinate clauses.
Compound SentenceHas two or more independent clauses but no subordinate clauses.
Complex SentenceHas one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause.
Compound-Complex SentenceHas two or more independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause.
Declarative SentenceMakes a statement. It is followed by a period.
Interrogative SentenceAsks a question. It is followed by a question mark.
Imperative SentenceGives a command or makes a request. It is followed by a period.
Exclamatory SentenceShows excitement or expressed strong feeling. It is followed by an exclamation point.
SentenceHas a subject and predicate and make sense.
Run-on SentenceTwo somplete sentences run together as if they were one.
