Mbira,  | An African finger xylophone made of 5 to 30 thin metal or cane tongues attached to a sounding board or box. The tongues are plucked with the thumbs and/or forefingers. |
Sanxian,  | String instrument with a long round hardwood neck and three silk strings of varying thickness. A skin membrane is stretched over the resonator. |
P'ipa,  | A pear-shaped fretted lute made of wood. Traditionally this has four twisted silk strings. |
| Dan Trahn | This 16 or 17 string wooden instrument is also known as a Vietnamese zither. The player produces a melody by plucking the strings with the right hand. The left hand plucks the lower portion of the strings to ornament and accompany the melody. |
Gaohu,  | A string instrument with a long round hardwood neck and two steel strings of varying thickness. In traditional Chinese fashion, the horsehair bow is inserted between the two steel strings. |
Jarana,  | An eight-string guitar used in various folk-music ensembles in the central Gulf Coast area of Mexico. |
Guitarron,  | A large, round-backed, non-fretted guitar that was invented around the beginning of the 20th century. It is strung with six harp strings. |
Castanets,  | A small hand-held percussion instrument made of hollowed-out pieces of hardwood or ivory. These pear- or-spoon shaped clappers are tied together in pairs and looped around the playerÕs thumb. |
Requinto,  | A small Mexican guitar that is used to play fast, highly improvisational melodies. The strings are plucked with a plastic pick. |
Maracas,  | A pair of gourds with handles that are partially filled with seeds, beans, or pebbles. They produce a high, rattling sound when played. |
Steel Drums / pan,  | Tuned percussion instruments made from oil drums. They were developed in Trinidad and are used for Caribbean-style music. |
Banjo,  | A string instrument with a long fretted neck, five strings and a calfskin or plastic sound box stretched over a hoop, or rim. |
Balalaika,  | A Russian member of the guitar family, it has a triangular body, long fretted neck, and three gut or steel strings which are tuned in fourths. Many are beautifully decorated. |
