Basic Computer Concepts

These activities will help you review basic terminology and concepts that you should already know. You can find answers in your Keyboarding textbook on preface pages xv-xviii in the front of the book and page R2 near the back of the book.

Central Processing UnitCPU
CPUInternal operating unit or "brain" of the computer
TabMoves the insertion point to a preset position
Caps LockUsed to make all capital letters
ShiftMakes capital letters and symbols shown at tops of number keys
CtrlWith other keys, executes shortcut commands
KeyboardAn arrangement of letter, figure, symbol, control, function, and editing keys and sometimes and numeric keypad
MonitorDisplays text and graphics on a screen
MouseA point-and-click input device
Esc (Escape)Closes a software menu and some dialog boxes
Alphanumeric keysMain part of the keyboarding including letters, numbers, and symbols
Numeric keysLocated at the right of the keyboard and used to enter numeric data and mathematic operators
Space barInserts a space in text
Enter (Return)Moves the insertion point (cursor) to the beginning of the next line
DeleteRemoves text to the right of insertion point
Num LockActivates/deactivates numeric keypad
InsertToggles between insert and typeover modes
Typeover (OVR)Mode in which any character typed will replace any character at the cursor
SoftwareSet of step-by-step instructions for the computer to follow
HardwareThe physical computer machine and its peripherals
PeripheralsAdditional hardware attached to the computer like a printer, external storage, or scanner
Input devicesMouse, keyboard, scanner
Output devicesMonitor, printer, speaker
Storage devicesHard drive, USB drive, CD/DVD
Operating SoftwareProgram that manages other programs on the computer (Windows XP, for example)
Application SoftwarePrograms designed to perform a specific type of task (Microsoft Word, for example)
IconsPicture symbols representing programs and documents
DesktopThe main work area displayed when all programs are closed or minimized
TaskbarDisplayed at the bottom of the monitor to show which programs are open
Title BarTop of a program's window displaying name of program running
Insertion PointFlashing line that indicates where the next character typed will be placed
FolderA way to organize files saved on a computer
